i was going to write a long long post on censorship.. then.. my nose started bleeding... that's a sure sign not to write it right?
anihow. we were talking about censorship during Media n Society today... my views areeeeee.........
at the end of the day i feel some sort of censorship should be implemented.. i still remember the day i was cussing and cursing the people who do the ratings and all that stuff cuz i couldn't watch a show that i really wanted to watch... BUT. now that i'm more mature (haha!) and after much thought... i decided that this is all for our own good i guess.. cuz looking from a parent's point of view i wouldn't want my child to be watching such stuff... this following paragraphs are from my Med Soc essay... so credits go to me.. haha!
"I strongly agree with the Elizabeth Noelle-Neumann's Cumulative Effects Theory and how the media effects over time, and no-body can escape either the media or the media's messages. Gradually, these children are going to imitate what the media shows and think that it is acceptable since the characters in the show do it too. When young children watch these shows, they are unable to differentiate the good principles that people should have from the bad conduct that is portrayed on television.
The Cultivation Analysis developed by Professor George Gerbner supports my views as he also believes that television has long-term effects which are gradual and indirect but cumulative and significant. He has also managed to study whether and how watching television may influence the viewer’s ideas of what the everyday world is like. Apparently, people who watch more television do imagine the world to be like the one that they see on the television screen.
If this is accurate, then what is there to disagree that children will be affected by such violent and conniving images that they see in the media?"
hmm.. just my view.. if there is absolutely NO censorship then who's to guide our youths? not all parents are free to spend time watching what their child watches and then take the time to explain every one of those scenes to their child. some people brought up the point that parents should be responsible to guide and teach their child the right values.. but it almost rarely happens.. what happens outside is out of the control of the parent. the kid goes out to watch a movie and when the parent asks "what did you watch?" u think the child is going to be honest if he watched a sex/violence infested film? Hence, censorship is to protect the child in areas that the parent cannot..
anihow. another thing caught my attention. age of consent. it does not mean that just because the age of consent in S'pore is 16 that it means that we should expose teenagers to sex scenes when they are young.. (11. what?! btw.. for those in cls.. Sweeden's age of consent is 15. which isn't much earlier than ours..and believe it or not.. its not the youngest... ) it doesn't mean that just cuz the age of consent is 16 that once we turn 16 we should go out and have sex.. so i think the age of consent has HECK to do with censorship. if you say that since the age of consent is 16 we should see more sex scenes to "inform" us on the subject i say...... FuCk. you are kidding right? what kinda sex "info" do u really learn on TV?? SERIOUSLY! do you learn about the method of birth control? and the options that you have for birth control? the only way to "inform" the people about sex is by sex education which is implemented in school. or by your parents.. or by books.. and by books i mean really those biology books or something.. NOT Sandra Brown......
as was brought up in class.. Singapore is a liberal and democratic country.. but boy am i glad that we are not 100% liberal and democratic. which is why kids in S'pore do not bring guns to school and shoot their schoolmates and the number of teenage pregancies are not sky high... if you lead this back to censorship, then i think we're doing one hell of a good job. no matter what, kids are influenced by the media in one way or another. censorship is good.. it allows kids to be kids.. kids don't think about sex. if kids watched an excessisve amount of un-censored sex scenes, they'd probably be all horny and have sex like bunnies. and then they'd get preggers cuz no one taught them how to use condoms at that age cuz they are still so young no one expects them to go out and have sex. and then they'll have abortions and scar their lives forever..
censorship is good. it may be hell at the moment you are at the cinema and realise that you are underaged for a certain show.. but if someone thought that it was unsuitable.. it probably is.. in some sort of way.....
anihow.. while i was doing some research on the age of consent thingy... can you believe that quite a lot of country's age of consent is 12?!?!?! whhhhat!?!?! i was still a kid at 12.. i only learnt about sex in like the fifth grade!?!? before that i seriously thought that kids were made by kissing... HAHAHAHA!
i discovered something new today during piano lesson.. i tend to stumble on notes when i look too closely to the scores.. however i can play smoothly when i close my eyes.. =)
